The Royal wedding attracted thousands to the streets of London, broke internet records and was watched by approximately 2 billion people worldwide. No doubt the event encapsulated the nation (and parts of the world), but what were people really saying about it? Online chatter about the Royal wedding began days before the event and grew considerably as the event drew nearer, so Alterian used its SM2 monitoring technology to see what the buzz was all about across the UK, USA and Australia.
With flowers, dresses and romance being the key themes of the day you would easily be forgiven for thinking that the majority of conversation would come from females. However the analysis found that it was in fact men in all three regions that took the majority share, with 57% in the UK, 56% in the USA and 71% in Australia.
We can also see that the public certainly made the most of all of the festivities taking place. From street parties in the UK, to house parties across the world there were thousands of conversations with the words ‘house’, ‘street’ or ‘party’.
Prior to the wedding it seemed like all the media could talk about was the mysterious designer of the dress and what it would look like. However, this trend wasn’t mirrored by public conversations with discussion about the dress falling well down the rankings as the 90th most popular. Love, care and commitment also featured at the bottom of the rankings.
Kate ruled the popularity stakes in the UK and USA beating out William by 1000 conversations. Australia, on the other hand, favoured the Prince in a tight battle.
With hundreds of thousands of conversations about the Royal wedding being tracked, there is no doubt it was a popular event around the world. Yet, it is easy to see from the data that conversations from men focusing on the parties and events surrounding the wedding drowned out the voices of females talking about the dress and the designer. So the old saying that men are from Mars and women are from Venus holds true!
